La Crosse Technology WS-2810U-IT Professional Weather Center with Solar Wind Sensor Reviews
May 15 2010br /br /So let's face it people who install weather stations at home probably ought to "get a life" as my children will say. My wife asks so what is the weather?, I'll look outside you go upstairs. Of course the point is, a weather station is a true nerd tool and I finally took the plunge and got a WS-2810U-IT professional weather station.br /br /Day 1br /I was quite excited about getting my professional weather station, I got home late after its arrival and installed it in my den but at night you can't really check the wind speed nor can you measure rain accumulation but you can record rain if you manually flip the rain gauge. All looked good!br /br /Day 2 (the installation)br /I live on top of a hill (1007 feet) in Oakland CA and we sometime get ferocious winds so I'm interested in measuring it. Also rainfall in hilly areas is truly local so I am interested in seeing how my rainfall compared to the official weather statistics of Oakland CA.br /br /My roof is rather tall but I have been up there before and I went up with tools to install the anemometer, at first it did not work at least the connection to the console was lost, so I went back down got the console and had it on the roof so I could check that it was working before I went back down.br /br /I placed the anemometer on a flat part of my chimney and I turned it upside down so as to be able to measure a wind speed to check if it worked. While checking it a large gust of wind came and blew teh anemometer off its unsecured perch and i saw it roll down the roof and disappear over teh edge to drop ~ 22 more feet to a concrete walk way!br /br /I was DEVASTATED!!!!!!br /br /I gathered my tools, crept down from the roof and went to see what was left. I saw plastic shards all over the place. The Anemometer cups were shattered. So much for my professional weather station.br /br /I told my wife what happened, I told friends, I told acquaintances and they all laughed! I suppose it is a little bit funny but the pain of not having my station!br /br /The main reason I bought this unit is that the wireless anemometer has a rechargeable lithium battery powered by a photocell. I have no intention of visiting my roof too often as it is quite dangerous up there!br /br /I called La Cross and their support was "busy" they said leave a message we will call you back so I left a message.br /br /After a couple of hours I called again and this time I asked for technical support and I got a very helpful technician and I told him what happened and he laughed too! I said i think I need a new anemometer and he said we are wholesale only and you would have to call another company to get a part like this! br /br /However we talked and we decided that really only the wind cups were broken and they can ship a new wind cup (and a mount as this fell into teh gutter and I cannot get to it!)br /br /This LaCross guy was so nice he said I would not have to pay he will just ship the parts to me! I offered to pay but I suspect paying involved too much paper work and as I had a good sense of humor about what happened he felt sorry.br /br /I got my parts with instruction to replace the anemometer cups in 2 day!!!br /br /It was not trivial replacing the cups without breaking anything but i got it done!br /br /I installed the anemometer on a 10 foot aluminum pole that previously held an antenna. The entire system seems to work very well. I installed the PC link and the USB wireless connection and all worked well!br /br /There were some glitches in the installation but as I pointed out at the beginning, this is a device for nerds and nerds can fix things.br /br /My review is as followsbr /br /1) The unit does exactly as what it says on the box. I am very satisfied so farbr /br /2) Considering the price, what this thing does and that it is not a mass produced item (remember they can only sell to nerds) it is a very good buy.br /br /3) I ahve no idea about teh longevity or how robust the anemometer will be but this is not a commercial weather station and as long as you take it for what it is it is a great buybr /br /Hope this is helpful, if you got this far down the review you are probably a nerd and should just buy one.br /br /Special thanks to the technician at La Cross whose name i did not write down! It is rare to encounter such a helpful person, thanks LaCross Technologies.br /br /jjm

Wind speed unit quit working- Full of water. Four emails and numerous phone calls. Service dept sends me an email on how to restart the unit. Really, it's full of water. Poor poor service and still waiting for a resolution two months later.
Do not buy this! - Robert Knapp - Sequim, Wa USA
Do not buy the La Crosse Technology WS-2810U-IT until you have searched online for problems with this unit. In brief, the rain gauge reads approximately double the actual amount of rainfall and there are problems with other sensors as well. Buyer beware!!!
